I
am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to
the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength.
I
stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white
cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side
says: “There, she is gone!”
“Gone
where?”
Gone from my sight. That
is all.
She is just as
large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side, and she
is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished
size is in me, not in her.
And just at the moment when someone at my side
says, “There, she is gone!” there are other eyes watching her coming,
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout:
“Here she comes!”
And that is dying.
Henry Van
Dyke

A
Favorite of Marcella, and a credo she truly lived by:
Make me a
channel of your peace
Where there is hatred, let me bring your love
Where there is darkness, only light
And where there's sadness, only joy.
Make me a
channel of your peace
Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope
Where there is injury, your pardon Lord
And where there's doubt, true faith in you.
Oh Master grant
that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console
To be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love with all my soul.
Make me a
channel of your peace
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
In giving to all men, that we receive
And in dying that we're born to Eternal Life.
St. Francis
of Assisi

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the snow on the mountain's rim,
I am the laughter in children's eyes,
I am the sand at the water's edge,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle Autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the star that shines at night,
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.
